THE CONSTRUCTION PHASES OF A FACING BRICKS VENTILATED FACADE

LAYING OF THERMAL INSULATION

The first step of a ventilated façade execution is certainly the laying of the insulating material, more commonly known as "insulation". The thickness and the material of the insulation are carefully chosen by the designer based on the energy performance of the building and the general stratigraphy of the external walls.

Generally the insulation, supplied in panels, is mechanically fixed to the structures behind by specific plastic anchors; more rarely it is glued. Moreover, if required, the insulation panels can be sealed between the joints by using specific silicone or polyurethane foam. It is essential not to leave gaps between the panels, so that thermal bridges are not created and the entire insulation system works homogeneously.

INSTALLATION OF STEEL SUBSTRUCTURE - SUPPORT SHELVES

Both at the base of the walls and on the architraves, and in general where the designer deems, the whole exposed brick wall is supported and fixed to the load-bearing structure behind by special steel shelves, the sizes of which are different, depending on the thickness and weight of the bricks, on the height of the wall to be supported and sometimes on the thickness of the insulation also.

Edil Mattoni is able to provide the customer with the supply and installation of the whole support system, including the structural calculation report, made by a qualified technician, for the sizing and verification of the substructure itself, and all the certifications ruled by law.

INSTALLATION OF STEEL SUBSTRUCTURE - ANTI-CAPSIZING ANCHORS

Beside the support shelves, the exposed facade is secured and protected against overturning towards the outside by a system of anchors (or "pins"), which are anchored to the wall behind by a plug filled with chemical anchor; saturating the holes with polyurethane foam assures that no thermal bridges are created, as in the case of the photo. The anchor will then be drowned in the joints between the bricks.

There are different shapes and lengths of anchors: spiral, "L", "T"; each of these has a different function, and the use of the various types is decided in the design phase, based on the static needs of the counter wall.

BRICKLAYING

While on the market they are nowadays the most variegated dimensions and colors of exposed bricks, the wall bondings, that is the way in which the bricks are laid and superimposed between the rows, are limited to a few of definite patterns, which resume and derive from traditions of secular laying and that follow simple and rigid rules of the art.

Nevertheless, even today they are able to give the ventilated façade an important aesthetic value and above all to create particular visual effects, on which modern architecture plays to create its best works, in a very close and indissoluble link between present and past.
